SKY EYES 3D BIG TIME

Sky launched its 3D platform not long ago. While now it seems to have given it a full go and will rather concentrate on the 3D format big time. In October it also launched a 3D channel that was heavy on European content to its native UK subscribers. While on one hand the Video on Demand feature has been the flavor of the season and all the major TV service providers are concentrating on that section, right from Virgin to BT and the other providers.

The integration of internet and TV to give an altogether newer and liberated experience to viewers has been a big hit with everyone. In the mean while though 3D has caught everyone’s fascination as well, one would do well to remember that 3D is an expensive proposition. Virgin Media's latest and advanced TiVo platform has created a big stir in the market with its many innovative features. People are also stating that Sky’s investment in 3D so soon may as well be a stupid failure and a loss proposition.

But Sky at the same time is equally confident of the 3D platform’s success in the UK and Europe market. There is also a major speculation of a complete takeover bid as made by Rupert Murdoch. Apparently a good 100,000 3D TV sets will be sold by the end of the year 2010 itself which is the reason that Sky is so confident and satisfied with 3D. Although a good two million TV sets are being shipped globally, this number is still modest at best when compared with the potential that it needs to touch.

This group of people who already own 3D TV is still relatively the adopters. 3D is no doubt the next big thing and is bound to transform the viewing experience of TV. But then again this is in the future as considering the expensive price of the overall 3D package; most of the population is going to find it difficult to go for it yet.

Coming back to Video on Demand, BBC-backed IPTV platform YouView is also soon to be launched. Not that Sky isn’t concentrating its energy here what with the launch of Sky Anytime Plus which is also an advanced VOD offering. Sky is still determined and feels that the time is ripe to go full throttle as far as 3D is concerned.
